The terms "biodegradable" and "compostable" are different. "Biodegradable" means something will eventually break down from the action of bacteria and other microbes in a natural environment. "Compostable" means something will break down in a reasonable amount of time in a controlled type of environment, won't leave harmful residue, and will become safe fertilizer for soil.
Our compostable products are labeled "compostable" because they have been certified by an independent third-party organization called the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), and meet the highest standards for composting. The BPI Compostable Logo, which is awarded to all of our compostable products, is the most widely recognized symbol for compostable plastic products in North America. The Compostable Logo provides credibility and confidence that Certified Compostable products will biodegrade as expected and according to composting standards set forth by EN 13432, AS 5810, ASTM 6400, and the ASTM D6868 methods.
Our use of the term "compostable" follows the Federal Trade Commission's "Green Guides" for environmentally friendly marketing. You can learn more at the FTC's website: https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/media-resources/truth-advertising/green-guides
Our products labeled as “biodegradable” actually are accelerated biodegradable. This is possible through our Accelerated Biopolymer Technology, which entails the addition of an organic additive that helps accelerate the biodegradation rate of the gloves in biologically active landfills. With this special technology the gloves become a polymerized food source which attracts microbes in landfills. The result is a faster biodegradation of 90% in 490 days, versus what can take traditional nitrile gloves decades, if not centuries to biodegrade. The process has been verified by an independent third-party lab using ASTM D5526 and ASTM D5511 methods.
The great thing about our Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves is the technology does not change the glove properties or efficacy, and does not biodegrade prior to disposal. Shelf-life remains the same as other high quality nitrile gloves, which is 3 years. Additionally, BNG™ Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves have been tested safe for use according to ISO standards, as well as food handling according to the U.S. FDA.
In short, probably not. And here’s why?
Our Compostable Gloves made with renewable resources and our Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves made with non-natural rubber material, which not all of these materials can be recycled in most places in the US. Our Compostable Gloves are best disposed of in a commercial compost facility instead where they will return to the soil as rich fertilizer. Our Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves should be placed with other waste that are landfill bound as most modern landfills will turn the methane gas produced in these bioreactors into useful energy.
The good news is we do offer Recyclable Gloves that can be specifically recycled with like materials. Additionally, all of paper product packaging is 100% recyclable.
Note: It can be tricky to tell the difference between a compostable glove and a polyethylene or petroleum-derived plastic glove as they are nearly identical in look, feel, tensile strength, and durability. That is why our products are labeled with the BPI logo, the most widely recognized symbol for compostable plastic products in North America. This allows our products to be easily identified as compostable, reducing the likelihood of compost or recycling contamination. Recycling facilities may have trouble processing compostable bioplastics, so it's important to keep compostables and recyclables separate. Because compostable bioplastic materials and PET don’t mix well, recyclers consider compostable bioplastics a contaminant. Similarly, compost facilities have a hard time cleaning out recyclables or plastics out of the compost.
Yes, all Eco Gloves products are manufactured and comply with Direct Food Contact Use in accordance with FDA standard 21 CFR 177.1350.
We do not advise on flushing any gloves into the toilet, even if they are labeled as compostable or biodegradable, as even these products will not retain the benefits of being compostable or biodegradable in a liquid or marine environment. To realize the benefits of compostable and biodegradable products, it is highly advised that these products (as well as any biodegradable or bioplastics) are disposed of in the proper bin, whether that be the local compost collection bin (for compostable goods) or in the regular trash bin (for non-compostable, but biodegradable goods). Alternatively, you can drop off at your local waste transfer station. Please note that certain jurisdictions may have limitations on accepting bioplastics, compostable, and organic products so always contact your waste management coordinator to confirm what is accepted in your curbside bins.
Compostable Gloves
General
Our gloves are considered compostable, and will only break down in a proper compost environment. The ideal conditions for composting require high heat and moisture, which can only be maintained in commercial compost facilities. These facilities also have the necessary soil bacteria, yeast, and fungi to completely break down compostable bioplastics.
Advanced Biopolymer Technology™ is our own proprietary ingredient additive that is organic and non-toxic and helps the gloves break down the accelerated rate of approximately 120 days in a compost environment.
No, Eco Gloves' Compostable Gloves provide the same performance and durability as regular plastic gloves.
Our compostable gloves have a shelf life of 12 months. As a general rule of thumb, we typically recommend purchasing only as many as you can use/sell within 9 months to avoid any concerns of degradation in structure or quality.
Ingredients
Eco Gloves are made from annually renewable vegetables like corn, cassava, sugarcane and other starchy bio-based proprietary components that are better for the environment. This natural bioplastic material is not hazardous to produce and is intended to break down into carbon dioxide, water, biomass (soil) when composted. These ingredients together create a material with strength, shape and compostability. Eco Gloves do not contain any chemicals, fragrances, essential oils, sodium benzoate, propylene glycol or its derivatives. They are also free of BPA, latex, powder, parabens, and phthalates.
When choosing materials for our gloves, we seek ingredients that are internationally certified for compostability and ones that ensure the highest quality, durability, elasticity, and shelf life for the gloves.
Generally, compostable glove materials are better for sensitive skin types, unless you have a specific sensitivity or allergy to corn or cornbased materials. Nonetheless, due to the way in which our Compostable Gloves' corn-derived material is heated and processed, it typically eliminates any immunologically reactive profilin, making it unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.
Additionally, Eco Gloves Compostable Gloves are latex-free, BPA-free, powder free and do not contain any chemicals, fragrances, essential oils, sodium benzoate, propylene glycol or its derivatives making them safe to use and comfortable for most sensitive skin types.
Our gloves do not contain any animal by-products or ingredients, including milk, lactose, casein, eggs, cochineal, honey, animal-derived enzymes, isinglass, gelatin, etc. We offer a completely animal-free, cruelty-free product.
Our gloves are made from gluten-free starchy plants like corn, cassava, and sugarcane and do not contain wheat, barley, rye, or oat products.
Our products are not meant for consumption and should not be ingested. Although they are FDA-approved for contact with food, they are not classified as edible or digestible. These gloves are designed specifically for hand protection and waste reduction purposes. We highly recommend using Eco Gloves Compostable Gloves solely for their intended purpose.
Disposal & Compostability
Eco Gloves should be disposed of in your compost collection bin or composting facility. To locate a composting facility near you check out: http://www.findacomposter.com/.
You can also search your local area for a collection coordinator or collection point. For California, visit: https://www2.calrecycle.ca.gov/LGCentral/Contacts
Alternatively, you can drop off at your local waste transfer station or if you have a green cart, you can place compostable materials in there for collection. These carts can be filled with food scraps, soiled paper, plants, items labeled compostable and displaying a green or brown stripe.
Please note that certain jurisdictions may have limitations on accepting bioplastics or compostable products in the green bin so always contact your waste management coordinator to confirm what is accepted in your curbside bins.
For disposal, our first choice is composting if it's available. Landfill will slow the process of decomposition so it’s much better for the environment to avoid placing any compostable waste in landfill. If you do not have access to composting, we recommend the product be disposed of in the “black bin” or general waste bin as a last resort. Landfilling is better than littering, and choosing Eco Gloves’ Compostable Gloves over traditional plastic without renewable materials still has an important environmental benefit.
Eco Gloves will decompose into rich biomass (soil) in approximately 90-120 days when placed into a controlled composting environment or compost system. No harmful chemicals are released into the environment during this process.
Compostable items are designed to be composted in a compost heap only. Composting is a very specific process which does not occur in landfills. Microorganisms, carbon, water, oxygen and nitrogen are all essential parts of the compost process and these factors need to be present in the right circumstances (such as in a compost pile) for composting to occur. Eco Gloves need to be composted under the same conditions and manner.
In an open landfill where air is present, compostable items will break down just like other biodegradable materials. Nonetheless, landfilling is better than littering, and choosing Eco Gloves’ Compostable Gloves over traditional plastic without renewable materials still has an important environmental benefit.
Our products are designed to be Industrially Compostable therefore we suggest properly disposing of our Compostable Gloves in a bin that is bound for a commercial composting facility. Industrial Composting facilities are able to break down retain the process, moisture and setting that most efficiently breaks down bioplastic products, resulting in quality biomass that can then be reintegrated into the soil. While home composting is possible, it typically does not always create the consistent composting conditions needed for our gloves to decompose properly or completely.
No, our products are not certified as marine degradable so we strongly advise against disposing of any plastics in oceans or waterways.
Due to the gloves' natural plant-based materials, our gloves do not break down into microplastics when composted. In fact, testing the product against the ASTM 6400 standard is part of the certification requirements to ensure compostable products do not leave behind nano and microplastics.
Certifications
International Standard EN 13432 is the recognized standard for biodegradable plastics, while in the U.S. it is ASTM 6400. Biodegradable plastics adhering to ASTM 6400 standards must pass four phases of testing in order to classify as "Biodegradable" or "Compostable".
Test results by an approved third-party independent lab shows that our Eco Gloves' Compostable Gloves meet all ASTM 6400 / EN 13432 requirements: (1) The glove material's volatile content meets the permissible levels and testing requirements, (2) After 12 weeks, composting tests reveal 90% of the material disintegrates to particles smaller than 2mm, (3) After approximately 120 days, biodegradation tests reveal 90% of the material breaks down completely into CO2 and water, (4) Toxicity testing using plant seedlings reveal that the decomposition of our glove materials leaves behind no harmful chemicals, and in fact, serves as rich fertilizer to help plants grow.
Yes, our compostable products are certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) to meet the ASTM standards for compostability. BPI certifies products using scientifically based standards to determine if they can break down in commercial composting facilities. Only products that have been officially certified by BPI can display the "BPI Certified" logo, so look for it to ensure your product will properly decompose in a commercial composting facility.
Yes, they are manufactured and certified to comply with Direct Food Contact Use in accordance with FDA standard FDA 21 CFR 177.1350.
Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves
General
No, our Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves are not meant to be composted and will only properly break down in an active landfill environment. Our gloves are designed to degrade specifically in an anaerobic environment (modern landfill through waste disposal) as opposed to an aerobic environment, which is needed for composting.
Eco Gloves' Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves are specially formulated with our Accelerated Biodegradable Technology (ABT)™ to attract microbes found particularly in landfills.
After the gloves are used, they can disposed in a regular trash bin. In a landfill, the gloves undergo a strictly enzymatic biodegradation process in which bacteria naturally consume the glove material and excrete an enzyme that dissolves and de-polymerizes the nitrile polymer chain, allowing microbes to further break down the remaining polymers naturally.
The result is water, humus, and biogas that can then captured and converted into clean renewable energy.
No, the technology does not change the glove properties or its efficacy, and the gloves will not biodegrade prior to disposal. Shelf-life remains the same as other high quality nitrile gloves, which is 3 years. The Accelerated Biodegradable Technology is only activated once in a landfill environment under very specific circumstances where the product is deprived of light, oxygen, and interacts with certain moisture conditions. You can use our Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves as you would with any other gloves without this technology.
Shelf-life remains the same as other high quality nitrile gloves, which is 3 years.
Disposal & Biodegradability
Eco Gloves should be disposed of in your regular trash bin bound for landfill disposal. Our Biogradable Nitrile Gloves retains its benefit of breaking down faster once it is exposed to microbial activity present in modern landfill environments.
While generally nitrile material can be recycled in specialty facilities, we do not recommend recycling our Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves as its benefits lie in its accelerated biodegradability in a landfill environment where it is meant to break down into water, humus (inert soil), and biogas, to address the waste problem in general. It is not meant to be recycled into upstream products as its special accelerated biodegradable material makeup may not allow it retain the same strength and quality in its remanufactured form.
Based on ASTM D5526 testing methods, our gloves will achieve 38.8% biodegradation in 320 days in an anaerobic landfill environment where there is low heat, high pressure, limited oxygen, no light and low moisture.
Based on ASTM D5511 testing methods, our gloves will achieve 90% biodegradation in 490 days in high-solids anaerobic-digestion conditions, also known as anaerobic digester or landfill bioreactor environment (the most common type of landfill in the USA).
No, our products are not certified as marine degradable so we strongly advise against disposing of any plastics in oceans or waterways.
Our gloves will not break down into microplastics. When the component of Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves biodegrade, they break down into water, humus (soil), and biogas, which can be recovered from active landfills and turned into energy.
Certifications
Our Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves biodegradation rate and efficacy have been verified by independent labs to meet ASTM D5511 and ASTM D5526 testing standards for biodegradability in a landfill environment. Currently, there are no independent third-party bodies that provide certification for biodegradable products (only for compostable products), thus we rely on these ASTM standards to validate biodegradation claims. To request full test results, please contact us at hello@ecogloves.co.
Yes, they are manufactured and certified to comply with Direct Food Contact Use in accordance with FDA standard FDA 21 CFR 177.1350.

As a best practice, we recommend storing compostable gloves in a cool and dry place, out of direct sunlight. Limiting exposure to high temperatures and humidity is recommended as temperatures above 110 degrees Fahrenheit can warp the gloves and/or affect its structural integrity.
Our gloves are designed to only degrade or break-down in a compost environment and will not degrade under normal storage conditions. In other words, they will break down completely when all essential parts of the compost process are present. This would include the presence of microorganisms, carbon, water, oxygen and temperatures of over 140 degrees Fahrenheit, which is typically what is present in an industrial composting environment. As a best practice, it is recommended you keep the gloves sealed and away from moisture, sunlight and heat when unused.
