BPI Certified Industrial Compostable
The result: Eco Gloves Compostable Gloves passed the standard requirement (at least 90% biodegradation within six months) in these conditions.
Eco Gloves' Industrial Compostable Certification
Product biodegradability is determined by two methods: ASTM D6400 Standard Specification for Labeling of Plastics Designed to be Aerobically Composted in Municipal or Industrial Facilities, which is a pass/fail standard. To pass ASTM D6400, the product must:
Biodegrade at least 90% within six months (180 days) in a municipal or industrial composting facility.
Disintegrate such that after composting for no more than 12 weeks, no more than 10% of the product’s original dry weight may be found in a 2 millimeter screen fraction.
Be non-toxic (and leftover compost must be free of toxins).
Contain no Heavy Metals or Fluorine.
Our Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves biodegradation rate and efficacy have been verified by independent labs to meet ASTM D5511 and ASTM D5526 testing standards for biodegradability in a landfill environment.
Based on ASTM D5526 testing methods, our gloves have achieved 21% biodegradation in 41 days in an anaerobic landfill environment where there is low heat, high pressure, limited oxygen, no light and low moisture.
Based on ASTM D5511 testing methods, our gloves have achieved 90% biodegradation in 490 days in high-solids anaerobic-digestion conditions, also known as anaerobic digester or landfill bioreactor environment (the most common type of landfill in the USA).
What is ASTM International?
ASTM International, formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials, is a globally recognized organization that develops and publishes technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems, and services. These standards help to ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of various industries and products. For the biobased industry and with biodegradable products, in particular, the two most accepted and well-known standards are ASTM D5526-12 (stringent long-term anaerobic biodegradation testing of materials under accelerated landfill conditions) and ASTM D5511-18 (short-term testing to determine the biodegradability of materials in a high solid anaerobic environment).
ASTM D5526-12
ASTM D5526-12 is the Standard Test Method for Determining Anaerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials Under Accelerated Landfill Conditions. The ASTM D5526 method is the more stringent of the tests, as it runs longer in duration and better simulates real-world landfill conditions. This test can be run for as long as necessary to determine how long it takes for a glove to decompose, which provides a more precise evaluation. The ASTM D5526 test replicates the most prevalent conditions found in landfills. Glove specimens are placed in three distinct, oxygen-depleted simulated landfill environments that contain varying amounts of solid waste, all kept at a constant temperature. These conditions are referred to as wet, moderate, and dry. The decay of these samples is recorded over time until the test concludes either after a requested number of days or when no further decay is detected. The biodegradability of the glove is then calculated as the percentage difference between the remaining solid material and the original total material.
ASTM D5511-18 / ISO 15985
ASTM D5511 is the Standard Test Method for Determining Anaerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Under High-Solids Anaerobic-Digestion Conditions, which replicates the anaerobic digester or landfill bioreactor environment. This test method may resemble some conditions in biologically active landfills where the gas generated is recovered and biogas production is actively promoted by inoculation, moisture control, and temperature control. The ASTM D5511 test assesses biodegradation in optimal landfill conditions within a laboratory setting. Glove specimens are put into a controlled system where waste levels are regulated to encourage the most significant bacterial activity possible. Similar to the ASTM D5526, the overall biodegradation amount is determined by subtracting the remaining solids from the initial sample's total.
The Eco Gloves Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves biodegradation rate and efficacy has been verified by an independent lab during production, using ASTM D5526 and ASTM D5511 methods for determining the gloves rate of biodegradability in a landfill and anaerobic digester environment.
The result: Eco Gloves are manufactured and certified to comply with Direct Food Contact Use in accordance with FDA standard FDA Title 21 CFR 177.1350.
FDA Food Grade Compliant
FDA Title 21 CFR Part 177 recognizes that any substance intended for use as a component of materials used in manufacturing, packaging, transporting, or holding food (also known as food contact substance) is considered generally safe for use in food or food packaging. Manufacturers must achieve FDA Title 21 CFR Part 177 certification for a glove material in order to deem it food safe. Eco Gloves are manufactured and certified to comply with Direct Food Contact Use in accordance with FDA standard FDA Title 21 CFR 177.1350.
